Just as the times in the novel vary, so do the environments and places, starting with occupied Palestine, passing through Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria, and finally the Emirates, where "Khatam" finds a homeland and refuge for herself and her children. The novel ends with a return to the opening scene in an attempt to convince the reader that they are witnessing a real work, not merely the imagination of a writer who has decided to venture into the realm of the novel.
