Had Abu Hayyan al-Tawhidi gained favor and prestige with Ibn al-Amid and al-Sahib ibn Abbad, whom he knocked on their door hoping for what he had always desired and dreamed of, this literary masterpiece of artistic prose would not have come to us. It would have remained locked away for fear of the brutality of these two powerful ministers of his time. This book represents a process of monitoring a volatile political era in the life of the Abbasid state, through Abu Hayyan’s companionship with two of the most famous ministers and politicians of his time. Through this companionship and coexistence, he formulated his experience in his book “The Ethics of the Two Ministers,” in which he monitored the characteristics of these two ministers of arrogance, conceit, corruption, and cruelty of tongue and pen. What enriched this experience and made it more creative in literary depiction is that Abu Hayyan was a man of wide culture. His connection with people of all classes and his participation in their lives gave him extensive experience. He is a bitter critic with a delicate sense that is affected by the slightest influences, and records the quickest and most hidden movements. All of this is accompanied by a superior linguistic ability that helps him convey his feelings towards people - no matter how subtle - with the utmost clarity and purity. With all of these talents, he attended the gathering of Al-Sahib and lived through what Ibn Al-Amid did. He saw, heard and encountered from them what filled his senses, so he recorded the pain he felt in this book, and produced it in expressive, wonderful and eloquent images, in which Abu Hayyan truly showed that he is the philosopher of writers and the writer of philosophers.
