The stranger

The novel begins with a telegram from the nursing home to Meursault saying, "Mother died, burial tomorrow, best regards." The nursing home is located in Marengo, eighty kilometers from Algiers. From here, the events escalate with the frequency of his indifference and his irony. Meursault, the narrator, delves into describing the elderly and the funeral. Meursault had no feelings at that moment except that he was smoking and drinking coffee with milk with the caretaker. All of that vanished in a moment of overwhelming desire, surging with lust when he met his girlfriend, who always tells herself that he is eccentric. Then we see Meursault go to the cinema to watch a comedy after burying his mother! Meursault commits the murder of an Arab man so that he can obtain a death sentence. This sentence is how Camus closes his novel through Meursault's words: "On that starry night... I felt for the first time the sweetness and tenderness of indifference and felt that I had once been happy, and I still am. I wish that everything would end and I wish that I would be less lonely there than here. All that remains is to wish that there would be many spectators on the day of the execution, and that they would greet me with screams of hatred and anger." "The Stranger" was Camus's first novel, and it was the one that made him famous. "It doesn't tell the story of an alienated person from his land, but rather the story of the eccentric "Meursault." "Meursault" is a Frenchman living in Algeria, specifically in Oran, among many Europeans who occupy the entire city. The stranger was someone who always accepted his life as it was, whatever it was. Meursault's only characteristic was his extreme honesty in expressing his feelings. In no situation did he try to express something he didn't feel in order to appear normal in the eyes of others.
