In this book, I have tried to document what goes on inside the souls of real people. I have tried to describe their common mental illnesses, their psychological ailments, their excuses and justifications, their genius and unconscious tricks of escape or evasion... how they deal with their fear, anxiety, guilt or shame, their compensation and transcendence... I have tried to document the resources and positive beliefs that I have seen contribute to treatment. When I look at this manuscript, I find that I have tried to be a personal counselor, thinking - as always - of the ordinary individuals who consulted me; so, naturally, this book deals primarily with the problems of those who are in a normal or semi-normal state
