Alberto Manguel was born in 1948 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. After numerous moves, he eventually acquired Canadian citizenship and worked as a collector of important literary works. He also worked as a translator, editor, novelist, and essayist. He spent his entire life among library shelves and books, and has even been called "the most voracious reader." But did Manguel simply read? He resembled a treasure trove filled with books, lines, words, and letters, and he had to make room for more. He wrote the book that made him famous, "A History of Reading." Although it wasn't his first book, it was translated into 35 languages after its publication in 1996 and subsequently entered bestseller lists worldwide. Alberto Manguel became a household name overnight. In this book in your hands, dear reader, you will read about his upbringing as a child, a teenager, a young man, and an old man, spending his days and nights inside his small office, next to his huge library. He recalls his upbringing in Buenos Aires and then his moves between the occupied territories, Paris, and London. He recounts his return to Argentina after the critical historical period it went through, only to find that he had lost many of his friends, colleagues, and teachers. Despite this, he sits at night, watching the halos of light and the solidified particles scattered across the pages of his beloved books, telling himself that he and his writer friends had lived a great life.
