"Toya" is an Egyptian novel where various characters, nationalities, and cultures meet. It intermingles many ideas, meanings, and principles, blending delicate emotions and feelings with desires and whims often dominated by evil. The author, Ashraf El-Ashmawy, carries us on the wings of his novel, woven to a gentle rhythm, to follow a tender, sophisticated love story between two protagonists from entirely different worlds. From the very first lines, he immerses us in its fast-paced events and diverse characters. Yet, as we delve deeper, we pause to question the true meaning of identity, belonging, and loyalty, the necessity for humans to feel these principles, and the importance of the right timing to search for them within oneself to achieve psychological and emotional balance. The novel's events also make us ponder the human need for a violent jolt to realize that material success is not necessarily a measure of self-discovery, nor an indicator of happiness and inner peace, and that the conflict between heart and mind may ultimately favor the heart because its voice is sometimes the most truthful. Toya, who lends her name to the novel, is a beautiful African girl with unique and rare characteristics, conjured by the author from the realm of imagination to be the central figure of his novel. Although she only appears in the middle and does not speak much, she has been, from the beginning, the symbol, the tool, and the idea that he skillfully exploited, making us eagerly anticipate her appearance. He made her a driver of events and characters, and an active element that changes the course of affairs and significantly influences their details. Toya represents a symbol for many beautiful meanings that humans seek but many may not encounter. The author endowed her with many contradictions: in her dark skin lies the color of rich, fertile, good earth; in her pristine beauty, youth, health, and will; in her traits, love, loyalty, and devotion; in her principles, persistence, strength, and patience; in her characteristics, intelligence, talent, shrewdness, and innocence; and in her name, origin, history, and the extension of roots. Through the lines of this novel, we sense the author's strong belief in the "Dark Continent" where we live but know so little about. It is the vast, rich Africa, coveted by the West sometimes through occupation, sometimes through exploitation, and other times by draining its human resources and natural wealth. It is a land suffering from poverty, ignorance, and disease, yet it remains steadfast, strong, patient, and beautiful. It endures difficult circumstances but has never lost its innocence, kindness, love, and tenderness, always ready to offer all forms of containment and care to those who pass through it and live near it, making everyone who sees it fall in love with it. However, it may weaken, losing its strength and life, but it never ends until it hands over the banner of new hope, for there is always a new Toya.
