I stood behind my window pane, watching the road. The street was empty and desolate, and the windows were closed and dead, lifeless, and motionless. Time stood still, and minutes became boring hours. My time was cheap, and I didn't know what to do with it. I am nothing. I went and came in the room, looked out the window, and held a book several times. I tried each time to continue reading, but I failed. So I closed the book, and failure triumphed over me, as it always triumphs over me. “I am eighteen, the age of youth, as they say, but I feel that I have suddenly grown old and become an old woman. The leaves of the trees fall on the ground of the garden, and gather in the corners of the street, and with them a flood of sad memories falls in my mind, and an overwhelming sense of sadness pushes into my heart, immersing it in its darkness, and a sharp feeling of loss sweeps through my soul once again.
