The Red Sheikh

Author's name: Abbas Baydoun

During the Ottoman era, we follow the story of "Sheikh Al-Ahmar," who grows up in southern Lebanon and travels to Iraq to study religious studies. However, he develops a passion for philosophy, which earns him this nickname. He also falls in love with women and enjoys many of them, most of whom are widows and divorcees, which at the time was considered a form of protection and safeguard against sin. Sheikh Al-Ahmar returns to his hometown to continue his life of serving religion in his own way. He marries Khadija, an Iraqi woman, and is accompanied by his sister-in-law, Asima, who gradually becomes the mistress of the house. However, the wife's departure puts the relationship between Abdul Hussein and Asima to the test, presenting both of them with complex and sensitive tests. The novel draws inspiration from history to address many contemporary questions about religion, freedom, love, betrayal, and the body, making the present seem like a continuation of history, and the past seeming to never leave us. The deeper question arises: Where do we stand in all of this? Is the present a leap from the past or a persistent return to a renewed origin?
