From the Novel: "Nights of the Plague" is Orhan Pamuk's long-awaited novel, which he dreamed of and wrote over five years. It presents a panoramic view of the final days of the Ottoman Empire. In the spring of 1901, when signs of a plague epidemic appeared on Menger Island, the 29th province of the Ottoman Empire, Sultan Abdul Hamid II first sent the chemist and health inspector, Bonkovsky Pasha, to the island to combat the epidemic. He then sent the successful young doctor, Nuri. The Sultan had recently married the young doctor to Princess Pakza, the daughter of his great-nephew, Murad V; therefore, the princess accompanied her husband on this trip. The island is home to the young Ottoman nationalist leader, Kamil Agha; the island's beloved daughter, Zeynep; the governor, who tries to take control of things and handle everything himself; and his lover, Marika. This is the story of the struggle of all those who made efforts to impose quarantine to combat the pandemic and preserve the island's customs and traditions, their eventual war with each other and the threats of death, and the love they experienced.
