The Red-Haired Woman "In his search for the soul of his sad city, Pamuk discovered new symbols of the clash and interdependence of civilizations." Swedish Nobel Academy In his novels, Orhan Pamuk takes us to a small town 30 miles from Istanbul, taking us back to the recent past in the 1980s, a time of coups and raging political events, through the relationship of a well-digger and his young assistant. In "The Red-Haired Woman," the protagonist searches for a replacement for his missing father. His relationship with the well-digger develops before he is involved in an accident that changes his life completely after meeting the Red-Haired Woman. When he complains to her about losing his father, she confronts him, saying, "You have to find another father for yourself. Everyone in this country has more than one father, like the father-state, the holy father, the pasha-father, the father of the mafia... Here, no one can continue to live without a father." So who is this mysterious red-haired woman? The novel depicts multiple images of the tense relationship between fathers and sons. The political aspect seems clear, but the romantic side is also strongly present here. Through an interwoven series of myths, stories, emotions, glimpses, suspense, and mystery, Pamuk ties it all together and weaves it into a fabric that keeps the reader gasping until the last line. It is a novel about family and love, youth and old age, tradition and modernity.
