"The Earth" is Abdel Rahman Al-Sharqawi's immortal epic. Its characters reside in all our memories: Mohamed Abu Sweilem and Abdel Hadi, Wasifa and Mohamed Effendi, Sheikh Youssef and the Mayor. They are real figures rather than mere fictional characters. "The Earth" greatly enriched the Arab novel and was considered by many critics to be the most prominent example of socialist realism. Here, Al-Sharqawi presented the Egyptian village for the first time, far from the romanticized view that depicted it as a vibrant paradise, to reveal the contradictions of feudalism, occupation, and corruption that afflicted the countryside and its people, pushing them to the brink of a struggle for survival.
