This novel is set in the American state of Nebraska, specifically in the town of Sweet Water, when the adventurous early Americans arrived with their dream of the New American West. They began to forge a railway path between towns to make those plains and mountains habitable, and they founded the Burlington Company, the first company specializing in railway construction. They were strong men like Daniel Forrester, who was one of the company's most important founders and contractors. He built a house on the highest hill in town and lived there with his beautiful wife, who was many years his junior. Mrs. Forrester's influence was not limited to her husband and her home; it extended to all the guests who frequented the house, and to all the town's residents and its young men. She radiated joy and happiness wherever she went, adding a special charm to that simple rural environment. Willa Cather raises the issue of the conflict between money and morals in the formation of the New West, and the struggle between honorable people and scoundrels, and the disparity of social classes. Then she sheds light on an important aspect of the life of a young lady who refuses to accept the customs and traditions of society, but rather considers them outdated and rebels against them intensely until she becomes an object of suspicion for everyone. However, at the same time, she did not champion her cause, but rather indulged in her private pleasures without considering her husband's name and social standing. In the end, Mrs. Forrester collapses, and after her husband's death, she sells the house and leaves for California to marry another rich man.
