"Simple Transformations: A Collection of Stories About Counterfactual History" is a short story collection that takes its reader on a journey through thirteen stories, each exploring events from different historical periods. Each story hypothesizes the occurrence of these "simple transformations" that historians believe were within reach of those involved under normal circumstances. It recounts the repercussions that arise from averting historical errors and questions whether, each time, they would indeed alter the course of history. Or perhaps the course of history might have so many diverse dimensions and other tributaries that it could absorb and assimilate these transformations and their outcomes, thus preventing their results from changing its path. These counterfactual history stories test the adage, "If this simple transformation had occurred, the course of history would have changed," engaging with it narratively in a way that brings history alive and flowing once more. Each story begins with an introductory preface that sets the reader on the historical path, followed by a marginal note indicating where the counterfactual narrative takes hold. A concluding margin at the end of the hypothetical historical story then finishes the reader's journey and returns them to the actual course of history.
