From the dark realities of childhood and upbringing in the Arab world, we read in “Choosing Madness” the unfortunate path of a “sane” person in that labor. Parental violence, in which a belt or whip might lead a child to what the secret prison cells of many oppressive Arab regimes cannot. The first oppressive regime led Hatem bin Abdullah, the fictional Saudi in the novel, to learn to lie, suffer panic attacks, anxiety, severe depression, certain unsuccessful career paths, and a lot of shame, all of which culminate in choosing madness. What does choosing madness mean? Are we writing scientifically about “madness”? In fact, the author is not an ordinary writer, but rather a psychiatrist who takes us into the most minute details of psychiatric medications and addiction, which are not expressed by writers and doctors like him.
