A novel full of the scent of history. It presents, based on the pretext of a novel, in which Muhammad Ali Pasha presents a giraffe to the King of France, a different image of this character from the perspective of the hero of the work, who is the character driving the events, driven by his love and admiration for the Pasha. He is a historian who rebels against the methods that historians usually work with, so that the research turns into a kind of investigation and inquiry that excludes all ready-made hypotheses to the point of questioning the “facts” established in books, and demanding the exhumation of the Pasha’s remains to determine the causes of his death! The novel brings to the fore a group of situations that governed the relationship between East and West, revealed by Hassan Al-Barbari, a former soldier in the Janissary forces, whose destiny led him to become the personal guard of the French Consul in Cairo. He is the one who accompanied the “diplomatic giraffe” on its journey to France. On this journey, Al-Barbari gets to know another world, strange to him, through his frequenting the most famous French salons at that time, “Madame Chantal’s Salon,” and he forms relationships and friendships with the most famous French writers (Stendhal... Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, and others...) to be surprised by a stark contradiction between declared convictions and actual practices. Positions that not only concern Orientalists who have always viewed the East from a condescending perspective, but even enlightened French intellectuals were not spared. "The Last Days of the Pasha" is another novel faithful to the style chosen by writer Rasha Adly in a number of her previous works. This style is based on a round trip between two historical periods, where historical events interact with present-day events to present an "imaginary narrative" of history that may be an invitation to reconsider a set of assumptions, or it may simply be an imaginary construction of events from another time whose influence has not ceased in the present.
