Hans Fallada wrote this novel immediately after the end of World War II.
Second, the situation in Glein was still ongoing. The events take place in Berlin between 1940 and 1946, under the Nazi Party, which ruled Germany with an iron fist, spreading fear in every corner.
The streets were unsafe, and everyone was under suspicion: neighbors, colleagues, even family members. In this tense atmosphere, the question of trust was deadly; a word or a gesture could be misinterpreted, becoming a quick ticket to the gallows or a concentration camp.
Fallada paints a vivid picture of this era, capturing the reality of ordinary Germans, those who lived and witnessed the tyranny of that time, and their efforts to adapt in different ways: complicit with the regime and neutrals, the weak and terrified, those who fled abroad, and the brave resisters who stood up to tyranny in secret or in public, bravely defying the Nazi evil machine.
Fallada's novel is inspired by the true story of Otto and Elise Hampel, who were executed in 1943 for their opposition to Nazi rule. The novel is a tribute to all these unknown heroes, whose lives were not removed from history books, but whose lives were dedicated to freedom and peace for future generations.
