When we finish reading "My Mute Lover," we don't tire ourselves much of classifying this work and whether it is a novel or a long letter reviving memories of the past. In fact, the title has both aspects. The narrator writes a shared novel with himself, gently infiltrating the reader's consciousness and leading him to experience a tale of incomplete love that makes words tremble and meanings dance to its tunes—meanings of loss. He writes it like a lover who wants to expose his secret of his own free will, as he recounts the story of his love for a mute girl, from whom he distanced himself after society rejected her. He says: “My sadness intensifies whenever I remember that our entire society stands against us, shouting, ‘It is not appropriate for a healthy man to be associated with an imperfect woman,’ as if it sets standards for us for love that we should not violate in order to receive its blessings for this love. It saddens me that a woman like you, who is overwhelmingly beautiful and has good qualities, does not have many opportunities to live as she wants and with whomever she wants, and is forced to be with those like her. They have wronged us, my beloved, they have kept us apart with the clause ‘not suitable’ or ‘not appropriate,’ and they have ignored the fact that together we can overcome the obstacle of voice, so that I can be your voice and you can be my silence…” In this work, Al-Salem uses the message technique in most of his texts, where the story is formulated using the message technique that is based on the dialectic of speaker/addressee. The speaker is Hattan/the narrator present directly in the text, and the addressee is Hanin the mute, present indirectly through the narrator, which makes the text a long, multi-part message addressed to a specific/absent person. The metaphorical language was present, as were the delicate poetic images that enriched its aesthetic dimension, and moistened its narrative with the water of poetry.
