Tolstoy's creative work came to a halt after War and Peace. This did not mean that the writer remained devoid of work; on the contrary: he read extensively and worked on writing The Four Books of Reading, which he considered the most important literary works of his life. New novel projects were emerging in his mind. However, Sophia Tolstoy wrote on February 24, 1870: “He told me last night that he had seen the model of a married woman from the aristocracy who had gone astray. He told me that his task was to present this woman as worthy of sympathy and not as a sinner. As soon as this model was before him, all the masculine characters and traits that had appeared to him before found their place and rallied around her.” But this was only an incidental idea; the project seemed to have no future. Indeed, over the next three years, Tolstoy completed the four reading books, sending them to print in 1872. He was preoccupied, above all, with the idea of writing a novel set during the reign of Peter the Great, a novel in which his grandfather, Peter Tolstoy, a mysterious figure whose life ended in a very dramatic way, would play a role. He surrounded himself with a mass of documents, read history books, and rewrote the beginning about ten times. Finally, unable to transport his imagination to the distant, great era of the monarch, he abandoned his project and returned to the creatures around him, to the social milieu he knew so well and which he could describe with greater clarity.
