Queen of the Desert: Gertrude Bell's Diary of a Journey from Damascus to Hail

Gertrude Lowthian Bell was a British writer, poet, archaeologist, traveler, political analyst, spy, and diplomat who played a political role in the Arab world. She was given many titles, including "The Uncrowned Queen of Iraq," "Queen of the Desert," and "Khatun." On December 16, 1913, she set out from Damascus to Ha'il with a caravan of 17 camels laden with provisions. Despite warnings from the Bedouins, Gertrude did not inform the Ottoman and British authorities of her journey, fearing it would be prevented.
According to the translator's introduction, her diaries constitute an important source for the history of the Arabian Peninsula, in addition to their mention of historical events in the region. The book is accompanied by a number of photographs dating back to the early 20th century.
The book is very valuable for those interested in the history of the region at the end of Ottoman rule.
