Sloane Caraway is a liar.

They're harmless lies, she tells herself, to make her life more interesting.

So when she sees a little girl crying in the playground one afternoon, she tells the girl's (very attractive) father that she's a nurse and helps him remove a bee sting from his daughter's foot.

With this lie and a chance encounter, Sloane becomes the nanny for Jay and Violet Lockhart, who have it all: a beautiful brownstone house, a daughter in a private daycare, and long summer vacations on a picturesque island off the coast of New York.

Sloane wants to be just like them. She wants their lives, and she's willing to lie about almost anything to get it.

But Sloane isn't the only one lying, and she soon begins to realize that everything that seems perfect about her employers hides a much more dangerous truth...
