Uncle's Dream

It is a short work written by Dostoevsky after his exile in Siberia between 1856 and 1858, and first published in 1859. It is characterized by being closer to comedy and social satire than to tragedy.

The events take place in the small town of Mordasov, where scandals and intrigues prevail. Maria Alexandrovna Moskalyova, a domineering and cunning woman, lives there with one sole goal in mind: to marry off her daughter, Zina, to the rich old Prince "K." Maria believes that Zina's marriage to the Prince will grant the family social standing and wealth, and she hopes that the Prince will die soon, making her daughter a wealthy widow.

However, Zina herself does not desire this marriage of convenience, as her heart belongs to a poor, ambitious young man who dreams of becoming a great poet. Thus, the interests of the characters intersect and their desires clash between greed and true love. Through these events, the novel highlights hypocrisy and social rivalries, and how characters exploit their ambitions and delusions to serve their own interests, in a comical and critical portrayal of Russian aristocratic society at that time.

Through satirical situations and unique characters, Dostoevsky, in "Uncle's Dream," presents an amusing and insightful study of greed, love, and social deception, with a touch of humor that clearly and sarcastically exposes the flaws of the human psyche.
