The ideas in this book apply to all couples – whether they are experiencing relationships characterized by anger, coldness and distance, or cooperation and agreement with their former partners. In the case of Danielle, mentioned above, she was willing to focus on her child, Sam, and give him appropriate attention and care, but she also wanted to get a divorce and planned a new life for herself. On the other hand, could Frank prioritize Sam over his emotional breakdown? And could you do that if you were in his shoes? Or perhaps the more accurate question: Can you do it at all? My goal in writing this book is to give parents understanding, practical advice - and as I hope - some compelling arguments for prioritizing children and shielding them from the difficulties and troubles of the separation crisis. This means that the optimal situation is to dedicate several months before the separation, and two to three years after it, to work on settling the legal, social, practical, and especially emotional aspects of the divorce process.
