The Dove's Necklace

And the cloud remained in the intimacy and the thousands

Author's name: Ali ibn Hazm al-Andalusi

The book dealt with matters of love, its attributes, circumstances, conditions, meanings, and symptoms, from the perspective of both genders, and expanded on its philosophy, and what lovers and those in love suffer from, from the kinds of torment, reproach, deprivation, pain, abandonment, and separation, and what they revel in from the fragrance of moments of meeting, the pleasure of joining, and the bliss of gathering.

Ibn Hazm explained his subject using his own experiences, reliable accounts, observations of his society and its customs and traditions, and stories told by narrators. His research incorporated proverbs, anecdotes, poetry, engaging stories and commentaries, and current events of his time. He imbued his writing with meaning that captivated the reader and dispelled any sense of boredom, clarifying his focus and drawing their attention. It is as if the writer is addressing the philosophy of love from a psychological perspective, elucidating passions, emotions, feelings, instinctive senses, human emotions, and the power of the soul and spirit that stirs within hearts and minds, arousing in them various forms of longing, anxiety, anticipation, and yearning.

Ibn Hazm exploited human instinctive feelings and emotions, to present them to us in a refined and diverse form. He presents the qualities of the ideal lover in light of customs, values, morals, and religion, and he detests the lewd lover, the base behavior that is far from God’s pleasure, as if in his work he is correcting our inclinations and desires in love and passion to guide them on the right path that leads to the glorious meeting, raising the philosophy of love to a position called praiseworthy.

Because of the literary importance of “The Dove’s Necklace,” Dr. Afif Hatoum took care to correct its text and add the necessary punctuation marks to clarify it, relying on two printed versions, the first edited by Dr. Ihsan Abbas, and the second edited by Dr. Ibrahim Al-Aibari, correcting the erroneous readings made by orientalists and those who came after them from among the readers of Arabic, with honesty and objectivity.
