Crises are an essential component of every culture, just as they are in human life. Critical moments open up possibilities for outcomes whose causes may be clear, but whose consequences are difficult to ascertain. Nevertheless, identifying them is essential for a deeper understanding of the formation and change of cultures. This book includes various research and essay pauses on various aspects of crisis in cultural history in general, and the history of individual cultural makers in particular. These pauses arose at different times, and their immediate motives also varied, but their focus is one: the implications of crisis and its potential consequences. Western culture occupies a large space among the book's concerns, as does Arab culture.
