This is a concise text compiled by the scholar and hadith master Abu Ja'far Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Salamah al-Azdi al-Tahawi, who died in 321 AH. It is a creed that agrees in most of its discussions with what the people of hadith and athar, the people of the Sunnah and the Community, believe. A number of scholars have stated that the followers of the imams of the four schools of thought approved of it, because it includes the fundamentals of belief agreed upon by the people of knowledge. This is generally the case, as there are places in which it has been criticized.
This text discusses the doctrine of the Sunnis as it appears in its two pure sources, the Qur’an and the Sunnah, free from opinions and schools of thought. It has been explained by many scholars. Al-Tahawi says in its introduction: “This is a statement of the doctrine of the Sunnis according to the school of thought of the jurists of the religion… and what they believe in regarding the fundamentals of religion and what they profess in the Lord of the Worlds.” It includes the types of Tawhid: Tawhid in Lordship, Divinity, Names and Attributes, and is supported by Qur’anic texts and the Prophetic Sunnah.
