There is no doubt that the term "Enlightenment" directly refers to light, that is, the light of reason, by which man sees things in a different light. However, the word "enlightenment," with the weight of "taf'il," also refers to a non-automatic mental process through which man can be enlightened by the light of reason. Either a person is enlightened on their own, or someone enlightens them. The importance of this process is confirmed by the translation of the word in some European languages. While the German translations "Aufklärung" from the verb "aufklären," like the English translation "Enlightenment" from the verb "enlighten," the Italian translation "Illuminismo," or the Dutch translation "Verlichting," refer to the process of enlightenment, the French translation "Lumières" merely refers to the lights that shone during that era. Despite the terminological difference in translation, the idea of ​​light is apparent in both cases, as it appears in phrases such as “shed light on,” “illuminated,” “was enlightened,” or “illuminated,” which all mean knowledge of the reality of something.
