Karel Fisher is a widowed vicar, the caretaker of a London church destroyed during the war. The vicar's house is a charming, diverse home for his daughter Muriel, his beautiful, disabled niece Elizabeth, their West Indian-born housekeeper Patty, and Eugene, a Russian refugee, along with his wayward son Leo. Karel has a brother named Marcus, who shares custody of Elizabeth, but whenever he tries to get close to the vicar or anyone in his house, he is met with rejection.
They are seven characters who, throughout the novel, constantly share a dance punctuated by attraction, repulsion, misunderstanding, and revelation, all revolving around the enigmatic character of Carel.

Iris Murdoch (July 15, 1919 – February 8, 1999) was an Irish writer, philosopher, and critic, best known for her novels exploring good and evil, morality, and the power of the unconscious. Considered one of the most important British writers of the 20th century, The Times ranked Murdoch twelfth on its list of the 50 Greatest British Writers since 1945.

You may return most new, unopened items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. We'll also pay the return shipping costs if the return is a result of our error (you received an incorrect or defective item, etc.).
