“Here we intend to define this physical and bodily baseness, for this baseness has not been studied, nor have its forms and manifestations in ancient Arab culture been analyzed. It has been excluded from Arab literary and cultural studies, and has been viewed as unworthy of being studied or read. In many studies devoted to humor among the Arabs, or satire in ancient Arab literature, the physical and bodily baseness has not occupied any place in these studies. What is worse is the distortion of its nature, where moral categories alien to it are applied to it, and this allows us to say, without any exaggeration, that the authenticity of this physical and bodily baseness in Arab culture has not been revealed.”
