I will begin by sharing my personal journey and how it was fundamental to the way the Sufi institutional leadership model was built.
Long ago, at an early age, the seed of spirituality began to grow within me. It began at the age of five. I was an innocent child who wanted to make friends, but I found myself subjected to constant bullying, which created a state of resentment and anger within me. This psychological state became a part of my college years, as I questioned everything around me, even the idea of being a Muslim by birth. At the age of twenty-one, I married, and this coincided with my certainty that Islam was my chosen religion, one I embraced with strong conviction.
As I began my early years as a businessman and went through several bankruptcies, I remembered the days of psychological abuse I had endured; I turned into a heartless machine that would stop at nothing. As I moved away from my spiritual inclinations and my worldly, materialistic nature took over, one day I began to feel excruciating pain in my right arm, which developed into complete paralysis three weeks later. Over the next five years, with a paralyzed arm and armed with absolute faith in God, I began the process of regaining my ability to move it again and returning to the path of truth, prompted by a phrase my treating physician said to me: "Do you believe in God?"
This question was a wake-up call. I became a traveler on the path back to my Creator, finding solace and a path in the lofty meanings of Sufism, including asceticism. All of this became fundamental pillars of the institutional Sufi leadership model that I share with the reader.
Now I present to you this book, which adopts a new perspective on spiritual leadership theory. The perspective I present to the reader is called the Sufi Institutional Leadership Model, built on the pillars of tolerant Sufism, taking the concepts of Islam (submission), faith (belief), ihsan (distinction), and the soul as the fundamental pillars of its structure. All of this is within the framework of a company.
IBAG, which I am honored to lead.
