Having studied and prepared himself for the rigors of an explorer's life, Burckhardt traveled extensively throughout North Africa and Asia, surviving in a hostile Islamic world by presenting himself as a pilgrim. In fact, he was so proficient in Arabic and knowledgeable about their religion that learned Arabs inadvertently praised him as a great Muslim scholar.
