Hadot, whose studies revolutionized the approach to classical philosophy as a way of life, believes that the goal of philosophy is not to offer a conceptual system to explain the world, but to bring about a radical change in an individual's way of looking at the world and their way of being, through a series of spiritual exercises. Here, he analyzes how Goethe's achievements fall within a long tradition that permeates the history of Western philosophy from Socrates to Nietzsche, where issues such as (focusing on the present moment, viewing from above, transcending the self, and integrating into a holistic perspective of existence) occupy a large space as exercises that enable humans to spiritually ascend, and grant them serenity, peace of mind, and joy in existence. The philosophical life is not limited to speaking and writing, but also to social action and what is shared. This was, early on, the view of Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius, and from this perspective of action, we should also understand Goethe's saying, which we have taken as the title of this book: "Don't forget to live," wishing to summarize, in this way, the extraordinary love of life we find in Goethe.
