I have been formally working on this book since 2005, and informally throughout my adult life. I have spoken and written to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people about topics covered in this book, and I have read the same number of books, academic papers, magazine articles, chat room discussions, and blog posts. Some of them I mentioned in the book, while others shaped almost every sentence I wrote. The book Quiet is based on the experiences of many, especially the scientists and researchers whose work taught me so much. In an ideal world, I would name every source, every mentor, and every person I interviewed, but for readability, some names only appear in footnotes or in the acknowledgments.
