Edmond Dante has just returned from a long voyage at sea. The captain of his ship, the Pharaoh, had died on the way, and Edmond had successfully led the crew and cargo to Marseille, France. The ship's owner, Monsieur Morel, was so pleased with the situation that he gave Edmond a promotion. Edmond was eager to marry the love of his life, a local woman named Mercedes, and everything seemed to be going well.

Unfortunately, there were two men who were extremely jealous of Edmond: the ship's accountant, Danglars, who was resentful of Edmond's success and promotion, and a local fisherman, Fernand Mondego, who loved Mercedes. Danglars decided they would accuse Edmond of treason and told the authorities that Edmond had an incriminating letter that would prove he was a supporter of Napoleon. Napoleon was the French emperor who had recently been removed from power and exiled to the island of Elba.

Danglars knew that on their way back to Marseille, Edmond had fulfilled the last wish of the dead ship's captain: he had agreed to deliver a package to a close friend of the captain and had then been given a letter from the island of Elba to deliver to someone in Paris, without knowing what the package or the letter contained.
