Ihya Ulum al-Din (The Revival of Religious Sciences) is one of the works of Abu Hamid al-Ghazali and among his most important writings. He wrote it in Arabic between 489-495 AH / 1096-1102 CE, after leaving the Nizamiyya Madrasa in Baghdad in 1095 CE / 488 AH and resolving to travel to Mecca for Hajj. He then secluded himself in deep retreat and devoted himself to study, writing this work during that period. He is renowned for his distinguished contributions to Ash'ari thought, Shafi'i jurisprudence, and Sufi spirituality. His book, Ihya Ulum al-Din, is considered a "Sunni Sufi encyclopedia." It is divided into four quarters, each containing ten books. The first quarter deals with acts of worship and obligations, focusing on the five pillars of Islam. The second quarter addresses a wide range of ethical and social issues, such as marriage, work ethics, and table manners. The third quarter deals with topics related to the weaknesses of human nature, such as lust, anger, and greed. The final quarter includes the virtues that save from Hellfire, such as patience, remorse, and fear of God. It is a comprehensive book on Islamic ethics, conduct, and exhortations, setting it apart from others. Written as a complete encyclopedia of everything a Muslim needs to know about their faith—belief, worship, conduct, and ethics—it addresses the interests of both the individual and the community. Written in a practical manner, it aims to elevate the text from a purely theoretical to a behavioral level, encouraging the integration of knowledge and action.
