The executive's harshest critics are his own employees. They are the first to identify your weaknesses, looking at you with a penetrating eye, and seeing your shortcomings and missteps, and the mistakes you are able to hide from your boss and colleagues. They don't tell you explicitly what they think of you, but they say things like that, and you can discern their degree of appreciation from their attitudes and competence if you have some sense. You can benefit from this evaluation if you understand what they are hinting at and be alert to danger signs. You can prevent many a small spark from turning into a raging fire.
