The novel revolves around a young woman in her twenties who is captivated by Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet, lost in its four acts. Events unfold, beginning with a cruise where George – the main character's husband – loses Mary Brown. Her lifelong friend reveals a secret Mary had entrusted to her for some time: her love for a ticket seller named Frank Clark. She met him one evening while he was selling tickets for the Swan Lake play. Events lead Mary to marry wealthy George Smith instead of the humble, poor ticket seller, causing her emotions to swing between the two. Subsequently, events continue, and she gives birth to a child. The midwife overseeing Mary's care turns out to be the ticket seller's mother, whom both Mary and her friend Elizabeth believed had died of tuberculosis, just like her husband George.
