In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Britain became the dominant power in the Arabian Gulf region. Due to this dominance, it claimed to have taken control of the region to stop Arab piracy in the Gulf.
This book challenges this myth and deeply discusses the methods of the real threat posed by the East India Company, which created the piracy myth for purely commercial reasons. The company always sought to expand its trade and shares in trade with India and the region at the expense of local Arab interests, especially against the interests of the Qawasim. However, the colonial powers in (Bombay) did not possess sufficient military strength to stop and subjugate the Qawasim. They had to persuade the British government to deploy the British fleet to war with the Qawasim to control them. For the colonial commercial objectives of the East India Company, a campaign was launched to defame the Qawasim by portraying them as pirates threatening maritime activity in the northern Indian Ocean and nearby waters, and attributing the plundering of ships sailing those waters to the actions of the Qawasim. This charade led to the bombardment of Ras Al Khaimah to destroy the Qawasim.
The author utilized the (Bombay) archives, which researchers had not previously accessed, to define and describe a critical period in the history of the Arabian Gulf. The book also sheds light on the methods and practices of the East India Company during a critical period in the history of the British occupation of the Arab region.
