In a rural English village in the 19th century, young Pip lives a poor life with his cruel sister and her kind blacksmith husband. Fate leads him to meet a horrific fugitive, a wealthy, eccentric woman who lives in seclusion in a sunless house, and a beautiful, heartless girl. However, his life continues on its inevitable path. Until a great fortune falls upon him from an unknown person, promising him great hopes. He leaves the blacksmith's shop to become a "gentleman" sailing the waves of Victorian society, with difficulty getting to know himself and the world around him.
In the journey of little Pip from childhood to youth, Dickens, with his brilliant characterization, his sarcastic sense, his critical eye, and his ability to delve into the deepest human emotions, takes us to explore with him crime and regret, hope and despair, revenge and forgiveness, reality and fantasy, dream and illusion, seriousness and play, and the hidden chains that bind us to the past.
Great Expectations was first published in serial form between 1861 and 1862, but it remains one of the most popular novels ever written. This may be due to Dickens's ability to create timeless characters that have become an integral part of English literary heritage, but it may also be due to the fact that the themes he explored, set in the Victorian era, are still relevant today.
