Whoever chooses to live free in the desert must take charge of his own affairs. This is a piece of wisdom he read in his father’s life, and he paid for it with his life. He too will pay for it with his life. Is this freedom? Is distancing himself from people a crime punishable by death? Is isolation blasphemy? Why does he torture himself? His fate has been decided, and no miracle will save him because it never saved his father. There are no miracles in the desert. If you fall into the trap, you must get out of it on your own, and if you can’t, then accept your fate bravely. He will never suffer. There is no pain there. The pain is here, in the rock, in clinging to the promontory, in life. The promontory is life. How cruel life is!

Where is the courage? Where is the Nile? Where is the fear of committing dishonor? Where are those things that his father spent his life trying to plant in his heart? He said that he would consider himself alive as long as these principles were alive in his son’s heart, and he would die only when his son betrayed one of these principles.
