How did Sam Savage manage to gift a little rat named Fermín a paradise of books? And make his paradise the basement of a small bookstore in Scoláy Square, Boston?

Fermin follows the path of “One Thousand and One Nights,” creating one story from another, while tracing the life of a human friend whom he loves one-sidedly because he sees him through the eyes of words, until he falls into the hands of another friend who saves him from death.

How could it not be, when the encounter is a meeting between the book rat, the encyclopedic reader, and the bohemian vagabond writer. The rat leads us forward in his earthly life as if leading us through a maze, with no guide other than his madness and his passion for literature, books, and life. We have no clear direction, no vision to inform us of the destination of our ships. All we know is that the succession of wondrous tales whisks us away from Earth.

It is a novel that causes a strange dizziness, from which the lost person emerges certain of one thing: this maze has guided him to the art that resides within him, wrought with rejection and resistance.
