في المقابل، عندما ننظر إلى الواقع، نرى أفراداً (أشخاصاً، أشجاراً) زائلة صورها باستمرار. هذه الأشياء تولد وتتغير وتفنى. هنا يبرز التناقض: كيف يمكن للحقيقة الثابتة (الماهية) أن تعبر عن واقع متغير (الموجود)؟
يؤكد السراي أن الفلسفة وجدت نفسها مضطرة للفصل بينهما. فإذا كانت الماهية هي "الحقيقة" التي تصف الشيء، فهي بالضرورة يجب أن تكون "متميزة" عن الشيء نفسه؛ لأن الشيء يتغير بينما الحقيقة تظل ثابتة.
