The book begins with a series of reflections by Rita, which brings us to the center of the story: the seemingly arbitrary decision by Nora, Rita's college student daughter, to withdraw from university life and live the life of a homeless person, carrying a cardboard sign around her neck bearing the single word "goodness."
Although the novel never begins as a puzzle, the reasons that drove Nora to withdraw from the natural world remain the primary motivation that drives Rita to write. In parallel, her relationship with her French teacher and mentor (a poet and Holocaust survivor) guides her narrative and her view of herself.
