انطلقت الحملة الصليبية الثانية من الغرب الأوربي لاستعادة الرها من أيدي المسلمين، ولكنهم فشلوا في استعادتها ، لذلك تابعوا طريقهم الى مملكة بيت المقدس، وعقدوا اجتماعا في عكا، تقرر فيه مهاجمة مدينة دمشق. لذلك شارك كونراد الثالث ولويس السابع، وبلدوين الثالث ملك مملكة بيت المقدس الصليبية وباروناته في حصار دمشق في يوليو تموز" عام ١١٤٨م، ولكنهم فشلوا في دخول المدينة، وانسحبوا بعد حصار دام أربعة أيام. وكان هذا الفشل ضربة قاصمة لأمال الصليبيين في بلاد الشام، في الوقت الذي أخذت الروح المعنوية للعالم الإسلامي ترتفع. وبعد ذلك غادر كونراد الثالث ولويس السابع مملكة بيت المقدس دون تحقيق الهدف الأساسي للحملة، وهو استرداد الرها من أيدي المسلمين.
