Let us begin briefly by recounting the personal events that led to the writing of the novel "The Shusharia." We must begin here with September 8, 1943, a difficult day for Italy and for the author: "One morning after September 8, a Hungarian who headed the Foreign Press Association told me, 'Know that you are on the list of persons wanted for arrest'" (From Moravia to Enzo Siciliano, p. 56). Moravia then hurried to travel with his wife, Elsa Morante, from Rome, heading for Naples, hoping to cross the front. But the train stopped near Fondi, so the couple decided to go to the Shusharia mountains to avoid the bombing and the arrest nets. There, they lived for eight months in a hut in the vicinity of Sant'Agata (Sant'Eufemia in the novel) with other displaced persons. They were not "liberated" until the end of May 1944, when they finally reached Naples, and then the capital, Rome, after it was liberated in June. These eight months spent in the bush left an indelible mark on Moravia. Years later, he said that two events significantly changed his life: tuberculosis, which struck him at the age of nine, and then the war. At the time, he lived in a hut with a peasant named Davide Marocco (Barede in the novel). He said that he no longer thought about anything other than living as he pleased, without writing anything, "because we had neither pen nor ink." In Marocco's testimony, we read that he spent most of his time writing in his notebooks. Who knows if those notebooks will ever appear? It is possible that he was writing notes on certain events, people, and ideas, which later congealed into three types of writing upon his return to Rome: - Political writings, as found in books such as *Political Memoirs* and *Man as a Target*; *Towards 1946*, a book about affirming faith in the human future; - Autobiographical writings about that experience, from which a series of events emerged in the novel *The Shoshariya*. Here, the author himself stated that the chorus of that novel contains only three original characters: Cesera, Rosetta, and Michele. It also helps us understand how this novelist works with an integrative technique.
