This book talks about some of the men and women who risked their lives, their courage in the face of incredible challenges, and the nature of chance; about the great injustice that some people suffer when their tragedies are made a state secret; about tragic events and the multiple versions of the truth. Often, heroism stems from instinctive actions in the heat of the moment, caused by circumstances beyond their control. There is a theme that says, "They fought to the last man and to the last breath," where individuals sacrifice their most precious possessions in the hope of living comfortably, and when annihilation seems inevitable, they have no choice but to sacrifice everything they own for the slightest chance of living one more day. History has witnessed many examples of individuals refusing to surrender. In World War II, the Japanese decided to commit suicide because of their religious belief that their lives belonged to their emperor. Among their fighters, what was known as "commendable fighting conduct" was widespread. This principle emphasized team spirit and served as a powerful incentive; it motivated a soldier to answer the call of duty, adhere to the rules of discipline and tradition, and be prepared to die. His greatest fear was being disgraced in front of his comrades. This could reach the point of absurdity when a commander demanded that members of his unit behave bravely and "not even care if they go to hell." One of the most bizarre incidents illustrating this occurred during the Battle of the Somme in 1916, when Captain Neville, a battalion commander in the British Army, ordered the men of the 8th Surrey County Regiment to abandon their positions and charge the enemy. At that point, he came up with the crazy idea of having his battalion kick a football across no man's land and chase it back to the German lines. Everyone in the battalion was killed, including the captain who had issued the order.
