"Sunset Island" is the first part of a trilogy of novels by author Gilbert Sinoué devoted to the history of Morocco before the French and Spanish occupation. It deals with the character of Sultan Ismail and the challenges of his rule, at a time of intensifying internal unrest and European and Ottoman encroachments on the country's sovereignty. Amid this tense situation, the Sultan will attempt the impossible, succeeding in quelling tribal uprisings and rebellions by those close to him, and in neutralizing the major European empires. The novel's reader is immersed in a journey into multiple historical directions, through the vision of Casimir Giordano, the Frenchman whom the Sultan appointed his personal physician. Casimir does not limit himself to narrating the era he lived through, but rather travels, back and forth, between multiple eras and personalities: the Kingdom of the Aures, the successive Moroccan Mamluks (Idrisids, Almoravids, Almohads, Marinids, Wattasids, Saadians, Alaouites), Dihya, Idris I, Zainab al-Nafzawiyya, Sultan Ismail, Louis XIV... The aim of this is to try to explore an entity of a special nature in this “turbulent East.”
