في القرن الثالث عشر، صدر عن القائد صلاح الدين الأيوبي، بطل مقاومة الصليبيين، تهور إدخال اثني عشر ألفاً من الرقيق الجيورجيين أو الشركسيين، لمصر. كان هؤلاء الأشخاص يدعون المماليك، وأصبحوا سادة وادي النيل فأنشؤوا سلالتهم الحاكمة الخاصة بهم. وفي بداية القرن السابع عشر، اجتاح الباب، أي الأتراك، مصر، لكنهم تركوا، مع ذلك، للماليك جزءاً من سلطتهم. كما أن قوادهم، الذين كان يصل عددهم لعشرين قائداً، استمروا في تسيير الأقاليم بلقب البكوات، مع الشرط الوحيد المتمثل في تأدية جزية سنوية لاسطنبول. في الوقت الذي تبتدئ فيه هذه الحكاية، تكون سلطة الباب قد ضعفت من نصف قرن. ويظل المماليك؟ من عشرة إلى اثني عشر ألف نفر؟ هم السادة الحقيقيون للبلد.
