"Kill me, or you are a murderer." These are the last words of Franz Kafka as he begs for another dose of morphine from his friend, the medical student Robert Klopstock. His wife, Dora Diamant, watches over him at his bedside. Meanwhile, Ottla, his dear sister, waits in Prague for news. This novel tells the story of the three main characters in Kafka's life and the intertwining destinies of their lives, with language and plot that are breathtaking throughout its chapters. In New York, Robert will become a prominent surgeon specializing in tuberculosis. Dora will survive Nazi and then Stalinist persecution, carrying on to us the memory of Kafka. Ottla will accompany a group of Polish Jewish children she volunteered to help, and the Nazis will lead her to a tragic fate in the Auschwitz camp on the 60th anniversary of her brother's birth. These testimonies allow for the formation of other images of Kafka as a person, a thinker, and a visionary, just as they bring the reader closer to Kafka's visions and their profound meanings in the eyes of those closest to him during the most difficult moments of his life. "Everything in this novel is true," says author Siksik. "I relied on very precise and very rich documents. I embodied the characters as a novelist, and this is a great challenge. Kafka does not need me, nor does he need any other writer, whoever he may be. Rather, the purpose of the novel is to present a new angle and find a new perspective."
