"Kill me, or else you are a killer." These were Franz Kafka's last words as he pleaded for another dose of morphine from his medical student friend, Robert Klopstock. By his bedside, his wife Dora Diamant watched him. Meanwhile, his beloved sister Ottla waited in Prague for news. This novel tells the story of the three main characters in Kafka's life and the intertwining of their fates, with breathtaking language and plot throughout its chapters. Robert would become a prominent surgeon specializing in tuberculosis in New York. Dora would survive Nazi and then Stalinist persecution, carrying Kafka's memory with her. Ottla would accompany a group of Polish Jewish children she volunteered to help, leading the Nazis to a tragic fate for her in the Auschwitz camp on the sixtieth anniversary of her brother's birth. These testimonies allow for the formation of other images of Kafka as a human being, a thinker, and a visionary, just as they bring the reader closer to Kafka's visions and their profound meanings through the eyes of his closest companions during the most trying moments of his life. Seksik, the author, says: "Everything in this novel is real. I relied on extremely precise and very rich documents. I embodied the characters as a novelist, and this is a great challenge. Kafka doesn't need me, nor does he need any other writer. But the purpose of the novel is to offer a new perspective, to find a new viewpoint."
