The first part of this book comprises nine chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter introducing China, sinology (the study of China), and its prominent figures. The following chapters address the first eight elements of Chinese civilization. The first chapter covers Chinese geography, describing its major cities and tracing archaeological efforts to uncover them. The second provides a brief history of China from prehistoric times to all stages of China's history. The third chapter is devoted to the political aspect, discussing the development of the system of government and the sources of governance in ancient China, the layers of the political pyramid, and all its components. The fourth chapter is devoted to the legal system in China: justice, the constitution, the law, and the organization of the state and society, which includes an understanding of the spirit of Chinese law. The fifth chapter is devoted to the military aspect of the Chinese state and empire. The sixth chapter discusses civil life and civil society, its composition, manifestations, and the causes of its decline. The seventh deals with the economic aspect and development of economic life in China throughout history. The eighth deals with Chinese culture, literature, philosophy, the history of ideas and philosophy, and the intellectual and philosophical schools of thought, Taoism, Confucianism, and Legalism, their followers, developments, and new schools.
