"Balloons" is a freedom of lightness and fragility in a materialistic and gray society, marked by a quick and shocking ending due to revelation and the violence that only begets. Isolation and loneliness, almost impossible characters, a state of transformation that begins with readings from classical literature by a young man suffering from dyslexia and his salvation from the authority of parents who turned him into a wild beast, in a bourgeois environment ruled by falsehood, managed by cruelty and furnished by censorship. Between reality and imagination, and with her simple, unpretentious and shyly humorous style, a style in which movement surpasses description, and with an economy of vocabulary, "Emilie Nothomb" was able to link the psychology of reality with literature with a weak and unreasonable thread of imagination.
